The Murlo Castle triumphantly towers over the underlying valleys and forests that stretch from the Monte Elceto di Murlo to Monte Tezio – an easily defendable and dominant position – when originally built. The castle was structured around an imposing square tower (that dates back to XI-XII centuries) for guarding, controlling, and keeping watch over the surrounding lands and roadways. Later, between the XIV and the XVI centuries, other buildings were added to the tower and eventually the boundary walls were also built.
